Sunday Snapshot: {Eggs and Ice Cream}

Matthew is used to doctor's visits, tests, appointments, therapies..........what he is not used to is a "routine 4 year old check up" appt! For that matter, neither is this pediatric nurse Mommy!!! Life has been such a roller coaster of emotions lately with differing opinions in Matthew's care, some neurological issues that are going on, IEP meetings that frustrate me, worries about communication methods for the future...(Yes, I will get to writing about all of this at some point, but honestly it's just been too hard to put into words yet...)

So..........instead of worries about this appointment, I packed his little Thomas backpack up with his new birthday fun activities and filled my little change purse with coins and off we went to the appt.

Watching money go into this cool huge piggy bank is one of Matthew's favorite things to do....he emptied Mommy's change purse into the container, which all went to the Children's Miracle Network!

He had to be sure all of the coins were gone - just in case there was one hiding!

Then it was time to paint Thomas with water - such a cool activity idea!!! Kept him occupied while we waited!

He looks pretty content in this picture in the exam room, what you can't see if how he totally freaked out with getting weighed! (We have no idea why this is, he will let the nurses take a blood pressure, listen to his heart, he lets the doctor examine him and his ears, etc. but not the weight thing! Obviously, it has some meaning to him, so we don't traumatize him with this, but we were able to get him on quick enough to see he was right around 34 1/2 pounds with all of his clothes on :)

He did so wonderful with Dr. Kate, and even checked her ears, throat, nose, and her relexes after she did his. Matthew surely doesn't miss a beat!

Then it was time for shots :( He is still working on making up some of his vaccinations, so he had to get them. When the nurse came in, he crawled on my lap, she scooted his pants down, did the shots (which he did not cry or flinch with!), but gave the nurse the biggest look of disgust like "what the heck did you just do to me?" and yanked his pants back up, grabbed his backpack and looked at me like - hey Mom, let's go! They hurt me!

So, guess what? This Mommy looked at her watch and decided to make a call and cancel his speech and OT which she never does, and she headed to Friendly's with the cutest 4 year old she knows for a breakfast date! It was our first Mommy/son breakfast out together and it was perfect. We have been working on him being able to make choices and pick what he wants, and guess what??? He asked for eggs by pointing to the menu, and then when we were waiting, he saw the coloring paper which had ice cream on it, he looked at me and signed ice cream please, and I just couldn't say no....

So, eggs and ice cream made my little guy very happy, and that's all that mattered in that moment :) (and no, the soda wasn't his, but he liked to have it next to his plate!)

Eggs and ice cream sound like the perfect recipe for making a "shot morning" better! You are the bestest mommy!
And I know about shots, Kylie had her five year appointment on Thursday and it was the FIRST ped. visit she has had to date that didn't require at least one vaccination. She was so happy she almost cried...
